Geek Squad’s new Circuit City competitor
Oh please. Speaking as an ex-Best Buy tech, pre-Geek-Squad, the service there sucks. The customers were always told their machines would be ready in 2-3 days… 2-3 weeks was more like it; much more if we had to send it in for service. Not to mention, if we had to wipe the hard drive, the poor users naturally wanted their software reinstalled… we were supposed to charge $20 per program! For a simple installation (not Windows, mind you – just programs), most of which you click a couple of times and walk away! I don’t have any first-hand knowledge of the repair experience with Geek Squad at Best Buy, but since it’s the exact same techs, I really doubt it’s changed any. Plus, everyone has to wear a white shirt, black tie, black pants, and black shoes. Even the girls have to wear the tie! Bleh… I already had to buy a new wardrobe when I started working there (khaki pants and the company shirts) – thank goodness I got out before GS came along.
Well, here’s the news: Circuit City is going to have a Geek Squad of its own, called Firedog. Whoever came up with that name… bleh.
The rumorsphere is rolling with news of Circuit City’s upcoming rebranding of their services department to compete with Best Buy’s Geek Squad. The new “Firedog” department will do both in-store and on-site home theatre/computer installations. Also, Circuit City is going to start carrying appliances again, which will be serviced by the Firedogs as well. No ETA on when this is arriving, but we’re sitting on pins and needles here!
