Ed Debevic’s in Chicago

Ed Debevic’s is a great restaurant in Chicago where the staff is rude to you… on purpose.  But you can be rude back!  It’s fun!  I went with friends and family on Friday, Sept. 1st, while we were in Chicago to see the King Tut exhibit. (Which was rather disappointing - don’t waste your money.)

Upon our arrival, the host took us to our table and tossed down our menus, and said “sit here.”  Our waiter, Biscuits, was at the next table taking an order.  (Another waiter was named Col. Mustard!)  When he came our way, he said, “Listen up! I’m Biscuits, and our specials today are a chicken quesadilla (pronounced kay-suh-dill-uh, hehehe)” and a couple of other things. I asked him if his brother’s name was Gravy, and he said it was, before he died in a tragic llama-shearing accident, and thanks for bringing it up.  He threw our Ed Debevic’s paper hats at us, and mine landed at the table behind us! Oops, lol!  They handed it back.  He smooshed my mom’s onto her head, and when we were all wearing them, he said, “Okay, looking sharp!” When my mom ordered the grilled cheese, he asked her, “Can’t you make that at home?!”  (She actually wanted the grilled chicken and misspoke - which he graciously fixed when he came back with the grilled cheese she didn’t want.  It *did* earn her the moniker of “your majesty” for the rest of the meal though!)  I didn’t have a nickname, but my friend’s was Stinky, and the girl I babysit for, who’s 11, was “little boy!”

When my friend went to take a picture of us in our hats, Biscuits leaned over and stuck his head in. As soon as she sends it to me, I’ll post it!

The staff at Ed’s also dances… after Biscuits brought shakes to those of us who’d ordered them, he and 3 other staffers got up on the counter and danced to a song queued up by the restaurant’s DJ.  It was hilarious… the guys were jumping and going wild, but the girl was only half-into it, saying, “Okay, there’s no way I’m jumping!”  Afterwards, he brought our sodas, to which I said, “It’s about time you got back with the drinks!”  He promptly told me to shut up. ;)

It really is more fun than it sounds.  It’s great to sass back at them too… an awesome place for kids, which is why WTTW’s Check Please! show featured Ed’s on their kids’ episode.  While we were there, a kid from another table had to go to the restroom and couldn’t find it.  His waitress was brash and told him “take a right kid, sharp right” and harshly directed him.  Someone went “aw” and she shouted, “Who did that?! The kid is fine… he’s fine!  We coddle our kids ya know and they don’t grow up right!”  It was all very amusing and great fun!

When Biscuits came back to take our plates, the 11-year-old had barely eaten anything.  He picked up the basket and said “just three more bites!” and then proceeded to make it the “Burger Express Airline” to try to get her to eat more!  That was so funny!  Even she (the 11-year-old) was laughing hard!

Dessert time rolled around, after Biscuits asked if we’d have dessert or get out of his face.  We all had the World’s Smallest Sundae, which is in an egg cup that you get to keep!  (They actually bring you a clean one to take home.)  It’s just a melon-baller-sized scoop of ice cream with a bit of hot fudge and whipped cream.  During this time, we learned that the girl at the next table was having a birthday.  “It’s this weird girl’s birthday,” Biscuits said, “and does anyone care? NO! But let’s pretend like we do…” so Biscuits had us sing and clap to his song: “This is your birthday song; it isn’t very long!”  Tada! That was it!  Then he sang, “Happy birthday you jerk” to her!

He finally brought our checks, “because I really want you to leave!” and it was signed, “Thanks for leaving. (Seriously!) Biscuits.”

The food - mostly on a 50’s theme - was great, and as I’ve said, it was a lot of fun.  My mom even had more fun than she thought she would.  Go to Ed’s, and as they say, “Eat and get out!”

I love Ed’s too - was there for a birthday dinner a couple of years ago and the entire restaurant sang happy birthday to my friend, and the whole time we were there, someone at another table would start to sing it again, and the whole place joined in - must have sung it ten times!! We go there everytime we are in Chicago and have always had a great time - good food, so much fun!! I was on another site with reviews and there were some people complaining - it made me mad!! I want to tell them to stay at home, don’t come out if you can’t appreciate Ed’s - I have never had a bad experience there!!! I will keep going there again and again - love to go with “new” people who haven’t been there yet!!
